This post is intended to clarify how to form ICPC competition teams and what is expected of teams.
Forming Teams
- The standard ICPC team size is 3 (with 1 non-competing alternate). Thus, competition teams should shoot for around 3-4 members
- Members do not have to be part of ACM Comp or any other ACM community
- Members do not need to be CS majors or possess significant coding ability
- Members may move around from team to team until they find a good fit for them
- Teams should make an attempt to pair members of similar competitive programming skill/experience
- If you are without a team or need additional members, you may contact me (jmmbbv@mst.edu) or make a post here (tag Blog) introducing yourself
Team Captains
Each competition team will elect a team captain
- The position of team captain is not reserved for the best competitor on the team, it is recommended for the most responsible member
- Team captains will be charged with scheduling and communicating the time and location of team practice sessions as well as leading the discussion when necessary
- Team captains will schedule a brief (5-10 min) 1-on-1 meeting with the chair to address any issues and give updates on progress
- Competition teams that are experiencing an issue with their team captain should come directly to the chair
Practice Sessions
- It is recommended that teams meet at least once a week to practice for however long they find agreeable
- Content intended to guide team practice sessions will be posted weekly here, there is no need for teams to prepare their own content unless they wish to do so
- Practice content will typically be divided into experience levels, teams are not expected to cover all of it
- Team captains will receive a cheat sheet to help teams who get stuck or want to verify answers
